These challenging economic times made it necessary for Family Bodega to close in August 2009. The staff of Family Bodega and everyone at Family Justice would like to thank our neighbors and partners for welcoming us as part of the Brownsville and East New York communities.

Opened in 2007 in partnership with the New York City Housing Authority, Family Bodega brought the Bodega Model to these Brooklyn neighborhoods, areas with some of New York City’s highest rates of crime, reentry, and reported family violence.

Family Bodega provided family case management to residents of Brownsville and East New York with a loved one involved in the justice system and/or struggling with substance abuse, mental illness, HIV/AIDS, domestic violence, unemployment, gang involvement, or other challenges. Family Bodega also focused on prevention, working with families when there is a risk of involvement in the juvenile or adult justice system.

The staff at Family Bodega guided participants to recognize, appreciate, and connect to internal and external resources, and provided support to families. Central to Family Bodega's work were partnerships with the New York City Housing Authority’s Social Services Department, Parole, Probation, the 73rd and 75th police precincts, and the NYPD Housing Police’s PSA 2, as well as many community organizations, churches, and clinics. Through partnerships with the Kings County District Attorney and PSA 2, Family Bodega also worked with youth to prevent and address truancy.
