'Ohana and Strengthening Families

lillian_koller_for_web.jpgGoverning magazine has selected Lillian Koller, director of Hawaii's Department of Human Services, as one of its 2008 Public Officials of the Year. She talks about the Hawaiian native word 'ohana, which the article describes as "the expansive sense of family that people feel for friends and relatives alike."

Two of the director's goals were to implement a system that uses "milder interventions" instead of removing children from their families' households, and to emphasize "strengthening families and addressing risk factors before they led to abuse."

 

Tonight: Carol Shapiro Hosts Reel Reentry Film Series

a_hard_straight_image_new_for_web.jpgFamily Justice founder and president Carol Shapiro will host The Prisoner Reentry Institute's Reel Reentry Film Series tonight, Tuesday, Nov. 18, from 5 to 7:30 at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, 899 Tenth Ave., in New York.

Tonight's film is the documentary A Hard Straight, directed by Goro Toshima. The movie "interweaves the stories of two men and one woman as they attempt to construct new lives on the outside."

 

Urban Institute Report on Reentry Stresses Social Supports

The Urban Institute report Release Planning for Successful Reentry discusses family and social networks in a section titled "Social Supports." (This section begins on page 21 of the report—page 25 of the PDF.) The paper, written by Nancy La Vigne, Elizabeth Davies, Tobi Palmer, and Robin Halberstadt, cites the Family Justice publication Tapping Social Networks for probation and parole officers.

 

Richmond Event Raises Awareness About Coming Home From Jail

richmond_walk_for_web.jpg The second annual Long Walk to Freedom in Richmond, Virginia, had a great turnout and drew awareness to the issues men and women face when returning to the community from jail or prison.

Our colleagues at the nonprofit organization Boaz & Ruth helped organize last month's Walk, which started at the Richmond City Jail and ended across the street at the Freedom House's Conrad Center.

 

Carol Shapiro's letter to The Toledo Blade

In response to an article about reentry from prison, The Toledo Blade published a letter from Carol Shapiro, founder and president of Family Justice. She stressed that social networks "offer a wealth of resources" and called attention to important family-focused work in Ohio, initiatives that center on improving reentry outcomes.
